ITER is an experimental fusion reactor that will recreate the conditions at the heart of a star to produce cheap green energy. It is truly a child of the world - Russia, USA, the European Union, China, Japan, India and Korea join forces on this enormous project that will cost in excess of €15 billion.
The reactor is currently under construction in Southern France and is scheduled to be switched on in 2018. It has been designed to produce ten times the amount of energy put in, paving the way for commercial fusion reactors.
